Introduction
This project had a very specific goal: to prepare a gift for a mother in Great Britain that did not look like a generic product. We made laser-cut sapele wood earrings and presented them inside a custom box with the message “For Mum”.
The idea was for the gift to work as a complete set. The earrings were not the only thing that mattered: the presentation also needed to convey that the piece had been prepared specifically for that person.
Sapele earrings with a design that makes the most of laser cutting
The earrings were made from sapele wood. It has a distinctive grain and tone that give much of the character to the piece without the need for excessive decoration.
In this case, CO₂ laser cutting and engraving makes it possible to work both the outer silhouette of each earring and the internal pattern. The result is an open, visually light design with details that would be much more difficult to reproduce consistently using manual methods.
With small pieces like these, special attention must be paid to fine details. Not everything that can be drawn on a computer can be transferred directly to wood: if an area is too narrow it may become fragile, while simplifying it too much can cause the visual effect of the design to be lost.
The box is also part of the gift
One of the decisions that most changes the perception of a personalised gift is how it is presented. Delivering the earrings inside a box prepared for them makes the whole set feel coherent from the moment it is opened.
The message “For Mum” was engraved on the lid. It is a simple personalisation, but enough to make it clear that the box and its contents were intended specifically for that person.
Inside, the earrings are placed on a base that keeps them properly presented and prevents the impact of the gift from being lost when the box is opened.
There is also a visual relationship between the two pieces: the wood of the earrings and the box maintain a coherent aesthetic, while the engraving and darker edges produced during the laser process provide contrast.
When the material becomes part of the design
This project also shows something important when ordering small wooden pieces: the material is not simply the surface onto which a design is cut.
The grain and tone of the sapele remain visible in each earring, so they form part of the final finish. Unlike a completely uniform material, two wooden pieces may show small natural variations even when they come from the same design.
That is precisely part of the appeal of using wood for jewellery and personalised gifts. The design can be repeated accurately, but the natural appearance of the material gives each piece its own character.
A personalised gift made in Girona
Although this set was prepared as a gift for a mother in Great Britain, the process can be applied to many other commissions: birthdays, anniversaries, family gifts or simply a piece created for a specific person.
Personalisation does not need to be complicated to achieve a personal result. In this case, three simple decisions were combined: a material with its own presence, earrings with a detailed design and a box engraved specifically for the recipient.
From our workshop in L’Estartit, Girona, we work on fabrication and personalisation projects for both individuals and businesses. For jobs like this, before manufacturing we assess the design, material and details that need to be preserved so that the result works at the real size of the piece.
A small piece still requires sound manufacturing judgement
Earrings are a good example of how the size of an object does not determine the difficulty of the job. In fact, as the scale gets smaller, details, spacing and the finest areas of the design become even more important.
The final objective was not to demonstrate what a laser machine can do, but to use it to create a coherent gift: detailed sapele earrings, protected and presented in a box that makes it clear who they were created for.
If you have an idea for making a wooden gift, earrings or another personalised piece, you can send us a reference or explain what you would like to achieve. We can assess the design and the most suitable way to take it into production.
