Introduction
How we manufacture a custom bobblehead from a real photo: 3D modelling, printing, finishing and key technical decisions from our workshop in Girona.
Custom bobbleheads are not just decorative figures. When they are done well, they combine precise 3D modelling, correct technical decisions and a manual finish that makes the difference. For this project we started from a reference photo of a real person to create a completely custom figure, 3D printed and hand-painted.
From portrait to volume: 3D modelling from a photo
The starting point was a clear front-facing photograph. From it we carried out the complete 3D modelling of the body and head, without using scanning or pre-made models. This step is key because a 2D photo contains no depth information and requires proportions, features and expressions to be interpreted correctly.
For this type of work, we do not aim for extreme photorealism but for coherent stylisation: an oversized head, recognisable features and a stable pose that works well as a physical figure.
Technical decisions before printing
Before starting the print, several factors affect the final result. With custom figures like this, not everything can be corrected afterwards.
- Part orientation to minimise visible marks
- Separating head and body to make finishing easier
- Correct tolerances for the bobblehead balancing system
This type of figure benefits from printing that prioritises surface detail over speed. This is where workshop experience makes the difference.
3D printing and manual finishing
Once the parts are printed, the work is not finished. In fact, with custom figures, the most critical stage begins: finishing.
The parts go through a process of sanding, surface preparation and priming before painting. Painting is done by hand, layer by layer, to control skin tones, clothing and small details that colour printing would not reproduce correctly.
The final result depends not only on the printer, but on how the part is treated afterwards.
This project makes one thing clear: not all custom figures are made the same way. Two bobbleheads may look similar in photos, but the process creates major differences in facial recognition, durability and finish.
- A good reference photo is essential for a good result
- Custom 3D modelling adds more value than adapting generic models
- Manual finishing is what turns a print into a quality object
Understanding these points helps you assess this type of work correctly and know what to ask for when you want a truly custom figure.
Custom manufacturing from Girona
This bobblehead was manufactured entirely in our workshop, using professional 3D printing and technical graphic design, taking care of both the process and the final result.
If you are considering a custom figure, a prototype or a unique object based on a real reference, it is important to work with a studio that understands both design and manufacturing.
