Introduction
Some gifts call for more than a standard purchase. When a piece has to represent a specific person, a profession and a story behind it, the work stops being simply 3D printing. It becomes a combination of modelling, visual judgement, manufacturing and finishing.
For this project, we made a custom 45 cm 3D bust as a gift for a surgeon. The commission came from Madrid and was developed from our workshop in L’Estartit, Girona. The figure is inspired by his face, wears black glasses, has a bronze finish and holds an anatomical heart as a direct reference to his profession.
This type of work demonstrates one of the real advantages of custom digital fabrication: many pieces can be developed remotely from photographs, clear references and good prior communication. The customer does not need to be close to the workshop to create a unique piece, provided the project is well planned from the beginning.
The work falls within our professional 3D printing service and also our technical design and modelling for manufacturing service, because having a 3D printer is not enough. The piece has to be printable, stable, visually recognisable and finished in a way that is coherent with the gift.
Why this project was not a standard figure
A custom bust has a particular challenge: resemblance. People often think the result depends only on the printer, but in reality 3D printing is just one part of the process. Before manufacturing the piece, the face, proportions, pose, expression and the elements that make the person recognisable all need to be interpreted.
In this case, the goal was not to create an exaggerated caricature or a hyper-realistic medical replica. The aim was to make an elegant, recognisable piece with presence, suitable as a professional gift. That is why we chose a bust format, a substantial height of 45 cm and a bronze finish that gives it a serious, commemorative appearance.
The black glasses are not a minor detail. In a custom figure, accessories help reinforce visual identity. A face can change depending on the light, expression or reference photo, but glasses, a pose or an object held in the hands can make the overall figure much easier to recognise.
The anatomical heart as a storytelling element
The heart held by the bust was not added merely as decoration. In a custom piece, every element should have a reason. Here, the heart connects directly with the surgeon’s profession and turns the bust into more than a portrait: it becomes a piece with a message.
This is an important lesson for anyone who wants to commission a custom figure: the model with the most detail is not always the best. The best model is the one that tells the story most effectively. One well-chosen object can add more value than many unrelated elements.
At Vanco Studio, we often work on custom projects where the balance between aesthetics and manufacturing is key. It is not just about making something look good on screen. It has to be manufacturable, handleable, transportable and visually clean once finished.
What really determines the result of a custom 3D bust
The result of a bust made from a photo depends on several technical decisions taken before printing. Reference photographs are important, but so are scale, print orientation, splitting the model into parts if necessary, sanding, assembly and surface finishing.
- Front and profile photos help establish facial proportions more accurately.
- A large scale, such as 45 cm, provides greater visual presence but also demands more control during printing and finishing.
- Accessories such as glasses or professional elements reinforce resemblance and the purpose of the gift.
- A bronze finish conceals certain surface transitions better and creates a more sculptural appearance.
This point matters: a 45 cm figure does not behave like a miniature. The larger the piece, the more visible small errors become. A misplaced wrinkle, an overly abrupt transition or an incorrect facial proportion can attract a lot of attention. That is why modelling and preparation are just as important as printing.
A commission from Madrid managed remotely
This custom bust came to us from Madrid and was manufactured in our Girona workshop. For this type of work, distance is not a problem if the process is well organised. The customer provides photographs, references, approximate dimensions or a clear idea of the expected result, and we assess the technical feasibility, modelling, printing and most appropriate finish.
Digital fabrication makes this way of working possible because many decisions can be reviewed before the final piece is produced. For a custom bust, this preliminary phase is especially important: the better the references, the easier it is to adjust resemblance, details and the intention behind the gift.
This type of project also shows that a local workshop can work beyond its immediate area. Vanco Studio is in L’Estartit, Girona, but we carry out custom work for customers on the Costa Brava, throughout Catalonia, in Madrid and elsewhere in Spain.
When it makes sense to commission a custom bust
A custom 3D bust makes sense when the gift needs emotional, professional or symbolic value. It is not the type of commission chosen just to make do. It is a piece intended to remain: in a consulting room, office, meeting room, display cabinet or personal space.
It can work especially well for doctors, surgeons, businesspeople, teachers, pilots, athletes, company founders or people who have marked an important stage. The key is that the figure should not be generic. It should say something about that person.
On our custom 3D bust from photo page, we explain this type of work as a personalised product, but each case is assessed individually because not all figures have the same level of complexity.
Custom manufacturing from Girona for all of Spain
Vanco Studio works from L’Estartit, Girona, on custom projects for local customers, Costa Brava businesses, customers throughout Catalonia and remote commissions across Spain. This bust commissioned from Madrid is a good example of how a highly personalised project can be developed without the customer having to travel physically to the workshop.
From the first references, we assess whether the commission is viable, which technology is most suitable and what finish may work best. In some cases resin printing is preferable for detail; in others, FDM may be suitable because of size, strength or cost. The correct decision depends on the final use and the expected level of finish.

Requesting a custom 3D bust
If you want to commission a custom bust, a figure from photos or a special gift piece, send us the idea, approximate dimensions and several reference images. We’ll review the project and tell you which manufacturing option makes the most sense.
You do not need to be close to Girona to order a piece like this. We can assess custom projects from Madrid, Catalonia, the Costa Brava or anywhere in Spain, provided we have good references and a clear idea of the expected result.
